Dr Bubbles: Company Profile
In India tea is not just a beverage, it is a sentiment. But Adnan Sarkar’s Dr Bubbles has changed the way people perceive tea.
Dr Bubbles is the popular chain that serves, among other things, its trademark Bubble Tea. Bubble Tea finds its genesis in Taiwan where the drink was invented in the early 1980s. The refreshing flavoured fruit teas and milk teas served with chewy tapioca balls sucked up through a big fat straw became a rage in several Asian countries. Yet, when Bubble Tea first debuted in India, it ended up confusing the palate of Indians who did not respond too well to the drink.
Dr Bubbles changed all of this! The inimitable chain opened its first branch in 2015 in Mumbai’s Bandra suburb offering more than 20 varieties of Bubble Tea. What made it click was the fact that the array of Bubble Teas was customised to suit Indian tastes. Sarkar who had witnessed the craze for Bubble Tea on one of his trips to South East Asia, felt that Mumbai may be game for this new drink.
He was right. Dr Bubbles found huge fan following in the city. Sarkar made sure that the authentic Taiwanese Bubble Tea was brought to Mumbai only after back-breaking research and thorough analysis. To cater to Indian taste buds, a makeover of sorts was given by adding fruit jelly and fruit-flavoured poppers to the milk and fruit teas. For ardent tea lovers, Dr Bubbles also introduced a special ‘chai’ flavoured variety. With a ‘base’ of green or black tea, Dr Bubbles’ fruit teas came infused with natural fruit flavourings.
The chain soon caught the fancy of Mumbaites who loved to explore the distinct options and flavours of Bubble Tea. Today, Dr Bubbles has 8 outlets in Mumbai including one at the immensely popular Phoenix Market City in Kurla and 2 located at Hill Road and Carter Road respectively in Bandra. Dr. Bubbles now also had plans of expansion across India and soon outlets will be opened at Gujarat, Indore, Hyderabad, Cochin and rest part of Maharashtra. Sarkar himself ensured that he was involved in the project at every stage right from designing the Dr. Bubbles logo to custom building the machinery to get the drinks just right.
All the flavours used at Dr. Bubbles are natural. Lactose intolerant customers can opt for non-dairy corn-starch based creamers. For diabetics, there is a stevia-based option. Besides, Sarkar is always on the lookout for innovations. This means there is always something novel at Dr Bubbles including flavours like honeydew melon, new toppings or the addition of savoury waffles — the idea being that there is a versatile spread to entice customers.
While the base teas are local, all the chewables are imported from South East Asia. Dr Bubbles also introduced fruit variants including green melon, berries, litchi and kiwi because Sarkar knew that it wasn’t a wise idea to run a business only on the milk variant as not everyone could like the taste.
